Eye Exam for Patients With Diabetes (EED)

Assesses the percentage of members 18–75 years of age with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) who had a retinal eye exam.

Why It Matters

Diabetes is a chronic condition marked by high blood sugar due to the body’s inability to make or use insulin. Left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to serious health conditions, including vision loss and blindness.1 Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults 18–64 years of age.2 Adults with diabetes should receive regular eye exams to help detect and manage visual complications.3 Regular eye exams are the best way to reduce the risk of blindness and maintain a healthy and productive life.
