Blood Pressure Control for Patients With Diabetes (BPD, BPD-E)

The percentage of persons 18–75 years of age with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) whose blood pressure (BP) was adequately controlled (<140/90 mm Hg) during the measurement period.

Why It Matters

Diabetes is one of the most costly and highly prevalent chronic diseases in the United States. Approximately 40 million U.S. adults have diabetes; 11 million of these cases are undiagnosed (1). Complications from the disease cost the country nearly $640B annually (2). Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. and killed approximately 339,342 people in 2023 (1).

Left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to more serious health conditions, including high blood pressure (3). People with diabetes are especially prone to high blood pressure because of the amount of insulin in their body (4). Controlling blood pressure levels helps reduce major cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke and heart failure) and microvascular complications (eye, kidney and nerve diseases) (5). The on-treatment blood pressure goal is <130/80 mmHg, if it can be safely attained. For adult patients with diabetes, blood pressure goal is ≤140/90 mmHg (5,6).
