Addressing Social Determinants of Health-A Resource Guide

This course includes highlights from the recently developed NCQA guide on social determinants of health–a resource for health plans, clinically integrated networks and clinicians to design and implement strategies that address SDOH for commercially insured populations. NCQA staff will facilitate a discussion of strategies, NCQA programs and in-the-field examples to improve SDOH interventions.

What You Will Learn

  • List at least 3 resources that provide social determinants of health interventions.
  • Discuss strategies for assessing social determinants of health.
  • Outline a plan for how to design, implement and measure social determinants of health interventions.

Keri Christensen
Keri Christensen, MS, is Director of Strategy Implementation at NCQA. Her industrial engineering background led her to a career in health IT. Ms. Christensen did her masters work in Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality and is a Lean/Six Sigma Green Belt. She was previously a measure developer at the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement. Prior to NCQA, Keri worked in Chicago at Medical Home Network. She was the 2016 Phyllis Torda Health Care Quality Fellow at NCQA; her research focused on social determinants of health.


Denys Lau
Denys T. Lau, Senior Research Scientist, leads research projects on health equity, social determinants of health, community health workers and long-term supports and services at NCQA. Prior to NCQA, Mr. Lau was at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, directing the administration and dissemination of the nation’s health care provider and establishment surveys. He has adjunct faculty appointments with the University of Illinois and Johns Hopkins University and is an associate editor of the American Journal of Public Health.


Brittani Spaulding
Brittani Spaulding, MPH, PMP, is a Manager in the Quality Measurement and Research Group at NCQA and is a certified Project Management Professional through PMI. She has led and supported projects focusing on health equity innovation, social determinants of health and assessing and improving patient experience. Ms. Spaulding received her training in Public Health from George Washington University and in Biology from Drexel University.


Jacqueline Willits
Jacqueline Willits is a Health Care Analyst in NCQA’s Quality Solutions Group. She works on grants and CMS contracts focused on the promotion of health care quality and health equity. Prior to NCQA, Jacqueline worked at Tulane University, conducting mixed-methods research on the evolution of the New Orleans food environment and on reproductive health program impact evaluation. Jacqueline has also had the opportunity to work in the not-for-profit and public sectors in Colombia, supporting social and economic development projects with the E2E Foundation in Medellin and adolescent health programming with the Ministry of Social Development in Bucaramanga. Jacqueline earned her Masters of Public Health in International Health and Development from Tulane University.
