Patrick H. Conway, MD, President and CEO, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Joins NCQA Board of Directors

WASHINGTON, DC—The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) is proud to announce a new addition to its Board of Directors— Patrick Conway, MD, President and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina

Dr. Conway is a nationally recognized leader in the health care industry. At Blue Cross NC, Conway leads is a health system committed to delivering the best health outcomes and best service experience at the lowest cost for customers. Dr. Conway is noted for improving North Carolina’s health care system, making health care more affordable and working with doctors, hospitals and others to improve quality and value.

Prior to joining Blue Cross NC, Conway served as Deputy Administrator for Innovation and Quality at the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In this role he also held the position of Director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). As the most senior non-political leader at CMS, he worked in both Republican and Democratic administrations and is considered one of the driving forces behind the national movement to value-based care, with health care payments tied to quality and innovation.

“Dr. Conway’s leadership and breadth of experience, most especially in value-based care, is what NCQA needs at this critical time in our nation’s health care system,” said NCQA president, Margaret E. O’Kane. “We are thrilled to have Patrick joining the NCQA Board of Directors and we look forward to his important contribution in our efforts to ensure quality health care for all.”

NCQA is governed by an independent Board of Directors composed of 18 members and the NCQA president. The board includes representatives from purchasers, clinicians, public policy experts, consumer groups and health systems, representing a multi-stakeholder perspective for improving health care system quality through delivery system reform and transparency.
