Introduction to HEDIS 2023

About this On Demand Training

This on demand series is a comprehensive overview of the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS^®) broken into four, self-paced online modules. In this series, you will learn basic HEDIS terminology, audit compliance process, review various HEDIS data tools and resources and review HEDIS clinical and survey measures. 

Modular Titles 

Module 1 – What is HEDIS?  (Audio Running Time: 25 mins)
Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to: 

• Outline how a HEDIS measure is developed 
• Describe the HEDIS measures & their domains 

Module 2 – HEDIS Compliance Audit (Audio Running Time: 45 mins)
Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to: 

• Review the Healthcare Effectiveness and Data Information Set (HEDIS®) Compliance audit process 
• Review the process to submit HEDIS data to NCQA 

Module 3 – HEDIS Data Sources (Audio Running Time: 20 mins)
Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to: 

• Describe types of data 
• Review the Administrative Data Collection Method 
• Review the Hybrid Data Collection Method & Sampling Guidelines 
• Discuss implementing HEDIS data collection and reporting 
• Discuss the Administrative vs. Hybrid Method 
• Discuss medical record review tips 

Module 4 – HEDIS Data Tools and Resources (Audio Running Time: 25 mins)
Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to: 

• Describe different ways HEDIS data can be used

Faculty

Jenna Barry

Ms. Barry is a Manager in Policy-Measures in the Product Delivery Division of the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

In her current position, Ms. Barry supports the HEDIS Volume 2 Technical Specifications and the development of other HEDIS products.  Ms. Barry represents the policy perspective on several NCQA projects including NQF endorsement and the Physician Quality Reporting System. She also works closely with other staff members in responding to NCQA customers and constituents through the Policy Clarification Support system and in developing Frequently Asked Questions.

 Ms. Barry received her Master of Public Health degree from Boston University School of Public Health. 

Emily Hubbard

Emily Hubbard is a Health Care Analyst in the Performance Measurement Department at the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

Emily supports projects related to the development and maintenance of performance measures focused on diabetes and cardiovascular care. She also supports the management and coordination of multi-stakeholder groups, including the Committee on Performance Measurement.

Emily holds a Bachelor of Anthropology and a Bachelor of Public & Nonprofit Administration, with a specialty in Community Health, from Grand Valley State University.

Cindy Ottone, MHA

Cindy Ottone is Director of Policy Measures in Performance Measurement at NCQA.

She supports the development and implementation of HEDIS and other NCQA measures. Ms. Ottone represents the policy perspective on several NCQA projects, including Measure Advisory Panels, the Audit Methodology Panel and HEDIS Data Submission. She also supports areas where NCQA measures are used in other organizations’ programs including, QRS/Exchanges, the CHIPRA Core Set, QPP and NQF.

 Prior to working at NCQA, Ms. Ottone was assigned to quality measurement and improvement at Companion HealthCare, a Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO. While at Companion, Ms. Ottone focused her efforts on HEDIS measurement and reporting, Disease Management Programs, and Quality Improvement Activities in both the clinical and operations areas. Ms. Ottone has also worked in large provider practices with their billing systems and strategic planning.  

Ms. Ottone received her Bachelor of Arts in Health Science and Policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.  She received a Master of Health Administration from the University of South Carolina, School of Public Health. Ms. Ottone is on the Board of Trustees at Palmetto Richland Hospital and has previously served as adjunct faculty at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and University of South Carolina School of Public Health.

Currently, Ms. Ottone serves her community as a Trustee on the Richland Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees and the Prisma Health Midlands Board of Directors.

In support of improving patient care, the National Committee for Quality Assurance is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide Interprofessional Continuing Education for the healthcare team.
