Best Practices on How to Improve Antibiotic Stewardship from a Health Plan and State Perspective

Experts will give updates on health plan best practices for improving antibiotic stewardship using the four HEDIS measures, as well as state initiatives related to antibiotic stewardship using the same measures.

Faculty

Erica Stohs, MD, MPH/Infectious Disease Physician

Erica Stohs is an infectious disease physician serving at the Washington State Department of Health as Lead Antimicrobial Stewardship Policy Advisor. Together with her team, she oversees antimicrobial stewardship activities and provides subject matter expertise for the Washington State’s team, including the promotion of outpatient stewardship using HEDIS measures. 

Apart from this work, Dr. Stohs leads antimicrobial stewardship for the Creighton / CHI Hospital Network. Prior to this, she served as Associate Medical Director for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Nebraska Medicine.

Dr. Stohs is board certified in internal medicine, pediatrics, and infectious diseases. She received her MD from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and MPH from the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She trained at University of Arizona-Phoenix for residency and the University of Washington-Seattle for infectious disease fellowship, where she specialized in antimicrobial stewardship.


Jennifer Strohmeyer, MPH/Senior Health Care Analyst, Population Health

Jennifer Strohmeyer is a Manager in the Quality Implementation Department at the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). She has led recent efforts to improve antibiotic stewardship using NCQA’s four HEDIS antibiotic measures. She has also worked on research efforts focused on person-centered outcomes for individuals with complex care needs. In addition, she has worked on a variety of quality improvement Learning Collaboratives focusing on improving pediatric immunization rates, colorectal cancer follow-up, and improving health plan reporting and performance on unhealthy alcohol use screening and follow-up.

Ms. Strohmeyer has a BS in Health Services Administration from James Madison University and has just received her MPH from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Stephanie Younts, PharmD, MPH, BCPS, LSSBB/Director, Medical Management and Pharmacy Services

Stephanie Younts, PharmD, MPH, BCPS, LSSBB serves as Director of Medical Management and Pharmacy Services for Community First Health Plans, a locally owned and managed non-profit health plan in San Antonio, Texas providing health care coverage for individuals and families in San Antonio and the surrounding seven counties. Community First is NCQA-accredited and has been recognized as a high performing health plan in Antibiotic Use HEDIS Measures. Dr. Younts oversees pharmacy clinical, quality, and utilization management programs for Medicaid, Medicare, Commercial, and Marketplace lines of business with a focus on medication therapy management and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Dr. Younts has over 20 years of pharmacy experience in various practice settings including managed care, inpatient acute care, healthcare administration, independent consulting, and community pharmacy. She serves as a subject matter expert in pharmacotherapy, public health, clinical quality, pharmacy operations and value-based care. Prior to Community First, Dr. Younts was the Director of Pharmacy at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and the Director of Clinical Pharmacy for WellMed Medical Management in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Younts earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy and her Master of Public Health degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health.

In support of improving patient care, the National Committee for Quality Assurance is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide Interprofessional Continuing Education for the healthcare team. 

This educational activity is approved for: 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM , 1.0 Nursing credits, 1.0 ACPE.

The assigned universal program number: JA0004597-0000-25-009-L04-P  Upon successful completion of this program (attending the full session and completing a program evaluation), participants will access CPE Monitor on the ACPE website to locate and track their CPE statement of credit.

If you are a pharmacist completing a course offering CPE credits, please notify NCQA through ncqa.org within 14 calendar days that you have completed a CPE course. You must provide the title of the course, your NABP identification number and your DOB (month/date) within the notification to NCQA. We also recommend you update your education.ncqa.org profile with your NABP identification number.
