Diabetes Recognition Program: Validating the Delivery of High-Quality Diabetes Care

The Diabetes Recognition Program recognizes clinicians who use evidence-based measures to provide quality care to their patients with diabetes. To earn NCQA Recognition, clinicians submit data demonstrating that they meet specific criteria for the 7 clinical performance measures comprising the DRP. This education course is designed as an introductory course for anyone interested in learning the fundamentals of the Diabetes Recognition Program. 

The course includes three modules on the basic topics of the DRP including: 

Module 1: 2023 Diabetes Recognition Program Updates and Overview 
Module 2: Recognition Process, Requirements, Measure Set, Scoring and Resources.
Module 3: Diabetes Recognition Program Q-PASS Demonstration

What You Will Learn

At the conclusion of the course, participants will have the knowledge they need to: 

• Identify the core clinical benefits of the Diabetes Recognition Program.

 • Describe processes and procedures to achieve Diabetes Recognition.

 • List the required measure set, scoring, initial population & specifications.

 • Describe the patient selection methodology and data submission process.

 • Outline the features and functions of the Q-PASS system.

This course is designed for any health care professional, health care decision maker or consultant interested in getting the inside perspective on the Diabetes Recognition Program directly from expert faculty from NCQA. This course is also geared towards MDs, DOs, APRNs or PAs and care managers treating diabetic patients, as well as ABFM Board Certified Physicians.

Caroline Blaum, MD
Senior Research Scientist

Dr. Caroline S. Blaum joined NCQA from NYU Langone Health where she was the Diane and Arthur Belfer Professor of Geriatric Medicine and Director of the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Care from 2012-2020. At NYU, Dr. Blaum maintained an active clinical practice and supervised clinical education for medical trainees in geriatrics and palliative care.  She led an extensive reach research program in translational research that was supported by the NIA, AHRQ, PCORI, and The John A Hartford Foundation concerning models of care for vulnerable populations, multiple chronic conditions, frailty, and diabetes in older adults. Prior to going to NYU, Dr. Blaum was Professor and Assistant Dean for Population Health at the University of Michigan Health System where she led UM’s experiences in Medicare managed care, ACO’s and PCMH. Dr. Blaum has been active in national policy work related to delivery system redesign and quality of care for older adults and people with multiple chronic conditions and has worked with the American Geriatrics Society, the AMA PCPI, and NQF.

Richard Bergenstal, MD
Executive Director
Park Nicollet International Diabetes Center

Richard M. Bergenstal, MD, is an endocrinologist and Executive Director of the International Diabetes Center at Park Nicollet. He is Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota and served as President, Science & Medicine of the American Diabetes Association in 2010. In 2007, Dr. Bergenstal was named the ADA’s Outstanding Physician Clinician of the Year and in 2010 he was awarded the Banting Medal for Service for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Bergenstal received his MD and endocrine training from the University of Chicago where he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine before joining the International Diabetes Center in 1983.

 His clinical research has focused on glucose control and diabetes complications and advanced technology including CGM and automated insulin delivery systems. He has served as a Principal Investigator of five NIH trials: DCCT, ACCORD, GRADE and two technology focused NIH grants, an insulin dose advisor system and a study of next generation automated insulin delivery systems.

 Dr. Bergenstal’ s clinical efforts have been directed toward improving systems of care for patients with diabetes by translating new research findings into practice. He studies the effective utilization of insulin therapy and the use of the ambulatory glucose profile (AGP) to standardize glucose monitoring metrics and reporting to improve glucose control and clinical outcomes. He teaches nationally and internationally on the importance of patient‐centered team care, has been listed in Best Doctors in America since it began in 1992, and has published over 300 peer reviewed scientific articles.

Christina Borden
Director, Quality Solutions Group

Christina Borden is the Director of Care Delivery Programs in Product Development at NCQA. In her twelfth year with NCQA, Christina oversees the development, implementation, and promotion of NCQA’s programs that are focused on improving care and care coordination. She maintains and advances NCQA programs as clinical measures and standards change. Additionally, she works to educate stakeholders, interpret and maintain guidelines to ensure NCQA’s programs properly align with federal guidelines and the health care industry as a whole.

Victoria Beecher
Assistant Director, Recognition Operations
NCQA

Vicki is an Assistant Director with NCQA’s Product & Costumer Operations and has been with NCQA since 2011.  In her role, Vicki leads a team of  managers & representatives that assist customers seeking Physician Recognition in Patient-Centered Medical Home, Patient-Centered Specialty Home, Diabetes and Heart Stroke Recognition. She is a PCMH Certified Content Expert.

Vicki attended Warner University in Lake Wales, Florida for her undergraduate and graduate work, and earned a Master’s of Science in Management. 

Prior to joining NCQA, Vicki worked with a large out-patient medical group in Melbourne, FL as the Director of Quality Initiatives. Vicki also served in the United States Air Force in Health Services Management for 8 years.  While in the military, Vicki earned the distinction of the Air Force Airman of the Year for the Health Services Management career field.

Kristen Bishop

Kristen Bishop, BS, is a Senior Health Care Analyst in the Performance Measurement department at NCQA. Ms. Bishop earned her Bachelor of Science in Public Health and has interest in chronic conditions research as well as health equity.

Rebecca L. Best, MSHS, PCMH CCE
Assistant Director, Operations Systems Management
NCQA

Rebecca is an assistant director in the Quality and Process Improvement unit, overseeing software product management for NCQA’s Product and Customer Operations Systems.  She is responsible for providing overall product vision, product strategies and successful formulation and execution of the product. Working closely with key stakeholders, Rebecca recommends system designs/enhancements to meet business needs and objectives as well as serve as the voice of the client. 

Before moving into her current role, Rebecca was a policy manager, supporting the maintenance of Recognition Program requirements and resource materials as well as a survey manager where she provided support to practices seeking Recognition. Rebecca is a PCMH Certified Content Expert and served as faculty at education and training seminars while in both positions.

Prior to joining NCQA in 2013, Rebecca worked for two accreditation organizations, CARF International and The Joint Commission.  In her role as a Recourse Specialist for CARF International she provided consultation and technical assistance to organizations and surveyors, as well as overseeing the planning and execution of annual surveyor training. At The Joint Commission Rebecca worked as an Account Executive providing accreditation education and guidance to organizations for Hospital, Home Care, Behavioral Health, Laboratory, Disease Specific Care, Health Care Staffing and Long Term Care programs.  

Rebecca has a Bachelor of Science in Health Policy and Administration from The Pennsylvania State University and earned a Master of Science in Health Sciences for Health Care Quality from The George Washington University.

Continuing Education

This course will offer CE for physicians, nurses and PCMH Certified Content Experts. Total number of credits offered for each profession type will be outlined here once the events are finalized and uploaded.
