Evolving HEDIS for Equity: Updates and Future Directions
Health care quality cannot exist without equity. NCQA is committed to building, measuring and promoting equity through all our programs. Empowering HEDIS to speak directly to these goals is a central part of this effort. Join NCQA staff for an overview of our equity measurement strategy and learn more about how we are evolving HEDIS to build toward better transparency and action. This course will include a review of new race and ethnicity stratifications, next steps for a more inclusive HEDIS and a preview of a new measure concept for social needs screening.

Rachel Harrington, PhD
Rachel Harrington is a Research Scientist in the Performance Measurement department at NCQA. She leads measure development and testing in the area of health care resource utilization and serves as the scientific and project lead on multiple federally funded NCQA measurement projects, including HEDIS risk-adjusted utilization measures, appropriate medication use in the elderly and strategies for evolving approaches to social determinants of health in quality measurement.
Before joining NCQA, Dr. Harrington led North American health economics and outcomes research for anti-infective products at Astellas Pharma. She holds a PhD in Pharmacy Systems, Outcomes and Policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy and a BA from Marquette University.
Deidre Washington, PhD
Deidre Washington is a Research Scientist in the Performance Measurement department at NCQA. She is currently co-leading efforts to bring health equity, social determinants of health and social needs into HEDIS. Her current portfolio also includes work on measures related to respiratory conditions, such as asthma and COPD, antibiotic overuse measures, and pediatric dental measures. Prior to joining NCQA in 2019, she served for three years as research project director at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. She earned her doctoral degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In support of improving patient care, the National Committee for Quality Assurance is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) to provide Interprofessional Continuing Education for the healthcare team.
