Doctor And Nurses

Not only do nurses have to learn to care for the sick, nursing as a profession is a continuous learning process.

In a recent partnership between the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and the School of Nursing at the George Washington University, nurses will have the opportunity to further their lessons NCQA representatives worked with the School of Nursing to produce nearly 30 videos for a new online course, “Improving Healthcare Quality.” This course is hosted on the popular Coursera platform, and is the first massive online open course (MOOC) at the School of Nursing.

The course focuses on several topics—such as statistics of medical error, the science of safety, how to build a culture of quality in a clinical practice. NCQA views it as an emerging opportunity to promote health care quality to budding health professionals outside the District of Columbia: Through the revolutionary MOOC design, the course has the potential to reach 15 million students across the world. Jean Johnson, a current professor in the School of Nursing and its former dean, helped create the course and hopes to build additional courses addressing critical health care-quality topics.

The partnership between NCQA and the School of Nursing share the same goals: Improve healthcare quality, and educate the next generation of health care professionals on why quality matters.
