No Shave November – Time To Remember Breast Cancer Screenings

November 8, 2018 · NCQA Communications

We’re well into No-Shave November, and it’s time to raise cancer awareness! Many people with cancer lose their hair. Participants in No-Shave November forego haircuts and shaving, and donate the money they save to cancer awareness.

NCQA wants to remind everyone to schedule annual check-ups and get regular cancer screenings. Early detection is key to prevention and successful treatment.

HEDIS Breast Cancer Screenings

NCQA created the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), one of health care’s most widely used performance improvement tools, to measure health plans’ performance. HEDIS is able to rate plans in various different types of areas including cancer screenings: breast, colorectal and cervical.

The HEDIS measure for Breast Cancer Screening (BCS) reviews women from 50-74 to see if they have had a mammogram in the past two years.

“Breast cancer is sometimes found after symptoms appear, but many women with breast cancer have no symptoms. This is why regular breast cancer screening is so important,” according to the American Cancer Society.
