Combining Technology and Tents: The Use of Telehealth to Promote Safe Access to Well-Child Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic created a need for primary care practices to pivot quickly toward telehealth to improve access to care. This course will include strategies for implementing a phased approach to telehealth, starting with infants and expanding to other age groups, that can serve as a resource for practices initiating or expanding delivery of telehealth.

What You Will Learn

• Describe barriers to providing primary care services during the pandemic.
• Outline specific countermeasures–including tools and structures–that ensure access to necessary primary care services while maintaining safe environments for patients, families & associates.
• Discuss pairing of telehealth visits with brief in-person mini-well exams to provide comprehensive pediatric well care.

Alanna Drake, MA, PCMH CCE
Alanna Drake is a Practice Transformation Specialist in the Population Health Management Department at Nemours Children’s Health System in Wilmington, DE. Since 2017, she has supported Nemours’ Delaware primary care practices with training and technical assistance in achieving and sustaining NCQA Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) recognition. Alanna also project manages preventive services initiatives, such as developmental and autism screenings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Alanna and Dr. Michelle Karten co-led the Telewell Project to rapidly implement the use of Telehealth for well-child care in Nemours Delaware Valley primary care.

Michelle Karten, MD, MSHQS, FAAP
Dr. Michelle Karten is a general pediatrician who has practiced clinical medicine for over 20 years, spending the last 9 years at Nemours duPont Pediatrics in Villanova, PA where she has served as the Physician in Charge. She has a special interest in healthcare quality and safety, especially as it pertains to population health. For over 3 years, Dr. Karten has served as the Medical Director of the Population Health Management team. In this role, she has championed initiatives with her team members to promote innovative healthcare strategies and solutions especially as they pertain to HEDIS metrics, value-based care, and healthcare quality. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Karten and Alanna Drake led the project to use telehealth as a means of providing comprehensive well child-care through the creation of a Telewell program.
