CCE Quarterly: Overwhelmed? Team-Based Care Antidotes for Our Evolving Workflow

We are only as strong as our team. Defining, integrating, optimizing, and nurturing the team is essential to improve patient care and provider fulfillment. We ask our patients, “What matters to you?”; we need to ask ourselves the same question. This session posits the clinical team as the potential solution to multiple challenges and frustrations with an evolving workflow. Predictable contributors to provider burnout can be reduced through high-functioning, team-based care. This session will share evidence-based teamwork strategies from peer-reviewed medical literature and other industries. Through instantaneous, anonymous audience surveys, this interactive session will demonstrate emerging best practices and lessons in optimal team implementation.

Faculty

Heidi B. Miller, MD

St. Louis Regional Health Commission
Dr. Heidi B. Miller is the Medical Director of the St. Louis Regional Health Commission and serves as a primary care physician at a Federally Qualified Health Center in St. Louis, Family Care Health Centers. She also works as a healthcare strategy consultant for multiple nonprofit equity-focused health agencies, including the Missouri Primary Care Association, the Missouri Medicaid Primary Care Health Home Initiative, Siteman Cancer Center's Program for the Elimination of Cancer Disparities, and the St. Louis Integrated Health Network.

She trained at Yale University and Harvard Medical School, and she completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is the recipient of multiple awards, including the Health Care Champion Award from Missouri Health Care for All, and was recognized as one of the St. Louis Business Journal 40-under-40 honorees.

Dr. Miller is a fierce patient advocate who has focused her career on promoting policies that foster equitable, integrated, team-based, trauma-informed care for our most disenfranchised patients. Her strategy and policy work focuses on uniting silos within the health ecosystem and ensuring equitable access to high value care. With enormous collaboration across multiple organizations, Dr. Miller was the citizen filer of the Ballot Petition for Missouri Medicaid Expansion that passed in 2020. Dr. Miller was just hired to serve as Chief Medical Officer for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services starting in January 2023.
