SUMMARY:Bridging the Gaps: Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder
DESCRIPTION:About this On Demand Training\n\nBridging the Gaps:
Treatment for Opioid Use DisorderThis course examines
treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) from a clinical and
research perspective. It will review approved medications
and their pharmacology\, efficacy and safety. Panelists will
 discuss these lifesaving medications (currently
 underutilized)\, describe characteristics of Medicare
beneficiaries with OUD and highlight disparities and gaps in
access to medications for treating OUD among underserved
Medicare populations. The course will close with a
discussion of successful models for implementation of
primary care-based treatment of OUD.\nClick here to access
the Quality Innovation Series registration page to register
or review the full course content.\nWhat You Will
Learn\n\nSummarize core principles and evidence supporting
use of medications to treat OUD.Describe characteristics of
Medicare beneficiaries with OUD.Identify disparities and
gaps in access to medications for treating OUD among
underserved Medicare populations\, based on sociodemographic
and health condition characteristics.Describe the components
of successful primary care-based models of treating
 OUD.Faculty\n\n\nDaniel P. Alford\, MD\, MPH\nDaniel P.
Alford\, MD\, MPH\, is Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean
of Continuing Medical Education at Boston University School
of Medicine (BUSM). He is on staff in the Section of General
Internal Medicine and is Director of the Clinical Addiction
Research and Education (CARE) Unit at Boston Medical Center.
He is also Director of the BUSM Safer/Competent Opioid
Prescribing Education (SCOPE of Pain) program\, which has
trained over 250\,000 health care providers nationally. He is
past-president of the Association for Multidisciplinary
Education and Research in Substance use and Addiction
(AMERSA). He has been recognized as a Champion of Change by
the White House and has received the American Medical
Association’s Award for Health Education\, the American
Society of Addiction Medicine Educator of the Year Award\,
the American College of Physicians Award for Distinguished
Contributions to Behavioral Medicine and the AMERSA McGovern
Award for Excellence in Medical Education. His clinical\,
educational and research interests focus on managing opioid
use disorders and safer and more competent opioid
 prescribing for managing pain.\n \n\nJudy Ng\, PhD\,
 MPH\nJudy Ng\, PhD\, MPH\, is a Research Scientist at NCQA. Dr.
Ng’s research and professional work has focused on the
impact of opioid prescribing practices and inequities in
access to medication treatment for opioid use disorder\,
health care quality\, and the effect of Medicare and Medicaid
policies on underserved populations. She has published on
health care access and quality gaps that affect underserved
populations\; racial\, ethnic and gender inequities in care
among older adults\; and the conceptual underpinnings of
health inequities. Dr. Ng has developed performance measures
assessing quality of care across diverse settings\, from
immunizations and preventive care to the management of
chronic conditions. Recently\, her work on opioid use
disorder treatment supported federal policy changes that
will reduce inequities in pain management for people with
sickle cell disease\, many of whom are racial and ethnic
minorities\, and improve their health outcomes. Dr. Ng has
served on technical expert panels for the National
Institutes of Health\, the American College of Surgeons\, and
the National Quality Forum. She has a PhD in public health
from Johns Hopkins University and an MPH from Columbia
 University.\n \nContinuing Education\n\nIn support of
improving patient care\, the National Committee for Quality
