Joseph Newhouse is the John D. MacArthur Professor of Health Policy and Management at Harvard University and a member of the faculties of the John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Harvard Medical School, the Harvard School of Public Health, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He received B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from Harvard University.
He has edited the Journal of Health Economics since its beginning 25 years ago. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine, is a past President of the Association for Health Services Research (AHSR), now AcademyHealth, and of the International Health Economics Association, and was the inaugural President of the American Society of Health Economists.
He has served as the chair of the Prospective Payment Assessment Commission and as vice-chair of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. He is a director of Aetna and Abt Associates.
