Latest Edition of Quality Compass Helps Customers Compare Clinical Performance
— The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) released its latest version of Quality Compass—Quality Compass 2012: Commercial. This tool is the nation’s foremost database of comparable information on clinical performance and patient experience for 385 commercial health plan products covering over 96 million lives.
The updated Quality Compass features performance data on active HMO, POS and PPO commercial health plans and contains both Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) and Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) data.
For the first time, customers can access Antibiotic Utilization benchmarks for reporting commercial health plans as a standard download. The Antibiotic Utilization measure set details the usage of prescribed treatments for patients.
Quality Compass provides state, regional and national benchmarks as well as individual plan performance. Health plans use this information to help compare their performance to others in their area and across the country. Employers and public purchasers use the information to see which plans have the best performance to offer enrollees.
Quality Compass 2012: Commercial will include the following new measures from four HEDIS domains:
Effectiveness of care
Health Plan Descriptive Information
- Comprehensive Diabetes Care - Blood Pressure Control (<140/80)
- Frequency of Selected Procedures: Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery
- Use of Appropriate Medications for People with Asthma (revised age stratifications)
– These measures were reintroduced after major revisions in HEDIS 2011

“Health plans, employers and other consumers look to Quality Compass to pinpoint areas for quality improvement, and to make sound decisions about the quality of health care they provide,” said NCQA’s Chief Information Officer Rick Moore.
NCQA will release the Medicare and Medicaid editions of Quality Compass in the fall. The Medicare dataset will offer trending for up to two years for the first time in 2012; this tool will include the latest HEDIS data published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, along with NCQA averages and percentiles. The RRU + Quality Index module is scheduled for release in October.
